"Bloody, hysterical."

Rating: 7 / 10

We follow Erika in her quest to stay unnoticed. At 7-ft-odd and a dyed blonde to boot, this is not easy. Then there is her caustic humour and vampiric habits. Her teenage sorceress side-kick however, relishes attention and loves blowing things up.

Somehow, this author manages to blend horror and humour, blood and friendship without skipping a beat. Bit by bit the darker history of vampires and their present day politics trickles out.

At first, the writing was a little jerky but eased off pretty quickly. As the author is not writing this in his first language, he encourages edit suggestions (spell check is not perfect) and corrects errors promptly.

This world is rich in texture and things undead. Dialogue is quick and descriptions detailed enough without losing the reader.

If you enjoy good action, a bit of magic thrown in and hosts of vampires and enemies, this is an excellent read.

The second book starts with answering a number of questions raised in the first book. we get to see a little bit more behind the scenes. The feel to the second book is darker, but I've been assured more of Erika's wit is to follow.

I'm not going to say what happens in the first few chapters of the second book, because that may just spoil the first for you.

One major change in the second book (9 chapters in, plus 2 prelude chapters), is that the PoV changes often between characters, whereas the first was only the MC, Erika.

I'm not too sure I like this yet. Sometimes it works, but often readers have said it's confusing. It can be jarring to have to suddenly jump back a few paragraphs when you realise it's a different voice.

Overall, a brilliant story well-told and one I am actively following. Instalments seem to have dropped off for a little while, but this is probably due to the author's work commitments.

I have just enough questions I'm waiting for the author to answer to make me want to keep reading.

"Excellence"

Rating: 9 / 10

Wow. This novel really blew me away. The author manages to convey Erika’s (the protagonist) caustic sense of humour, while also hinting at darker things in her background.

The novel is packed with action, there is barely a dull moment. This suited me, but I would have also liked to know more about the runes and things used by the characters.

Belial seems well researched about guns and grenades, and so the inclusion of these flows smoothly with the more old-world ideas of Vampires and Mages.

Book 1 has now been completed, and that's as far as I read (although Book 2 is now being published 4 times a week). I say go take a look, even if Vampires aren't initially your kind of thing.
