"No Cats Were Harmed in the Making of this Review"

Rating: 7 / 10

Opener: Funny. No more really need be said. I mean sure you have your romance and your supernatural but what really stands out for me is the humour. I love two of the three characters with steady point of views. Briar and Lilith. You’ve got a snarky, lazy and all around hilarious spellcaster with a rather unhealthy like of getting even. Then there’s the not so sex crazed sex demon, trying to hide from what she is behind a severe secretary like image (and failing quite abysmally I might add.). Then there’s Liam. I didn’t enjoy him. Sure he was funny when Briar was verbally beating him up but only in the way the guy who just slipped on a banana peel is funny. So I’ll say if you’re looking for some laughs ignore the rest of this go over there now.

Pros: Hilarious. Funny. Comical. Side-splitting. What other words are there for funny? It kept me laughing almost all the way through. Whether because of Briar’s smart-ass-ery or because of Lilith’s maybe unintentionally naivety.  I can’t remember any web novel making me laugh so hard as this one.

The page layouts were a wonderful bonus too. They were very easy to read and just seemed to go so well with the story.

Finally the characters. They were what sealed this for me more than anything. Sometimes you find a story with a great plot but not so great characters and keep reading just because you want to see how this ends. Well it kind of goes in reverse with Curio Killed The Cat. The plot may not be spectacular – interesting, yes but not spectacular – but the characters make it that way. If this had different characters or they weren’t as easy to connect with for me I may not have liked it as much as I do but they are easy for me to connect with and so they just take the plot to a level that’s interesting. The problems wouldn’t have seemed so massive if I couldn’t really connect with Briar, Lilith and Liam as the shop gets put in danger but I felt it. I could empathize with their sadness over losing a place, though not perfect, was like a home to them. It’s not too often I find a story like that.

Cons: Liam’s little fan club, while childishly amusing, seemed to be a boring interruption in an otherwise great movie. Like a commercial placed in a place to leave you hanging for ten minutes in an action movie or show. The only time it ever really interested me was one of the last few times you saw through Alastair’s point of view and there was a fight.

As with Skyla’s other works I wish she’d describe her characters a little more. Lilith I got but Briar and Liam I had to go and look at her wonderful gallery of pictures.

In Closing: Read this if you’re in need of a laugh one night. I will warn people fresh off a break-up it might not be great for you as you won’t find it funny but other than that it’s good for a laugh. If you want to find some characters that are easy to connect with instead of just some fantastic plot with cookie cutter characters this is the story for you.

"loved it! "

Rating: 10 / 10

This was an amazing novel as well! i am a huge fan of Skyla, and i do not usually read books, but when i came across this bored at work, and i didnt have anything better to do than read, i wanted to find something i was truly interested in. i love fantasy movies, and fiction movies. Movies that you know in real life can never happen, so when i started reading her novels i got lost in them, and could not get enough of them. In Curio Killed the Cat, the main character Briar, was not only spunky and bad ass, but she had a soft side, and girls and women could relate to her, in the aspect that she had her heart broken, and didnt want people to know she was secretly upset about it, because she is generally to everyone, the hard core bad chick! My favorite character was the little christian girl, who was in love with the Wiccan vegan who she thought was Jesus! OMG did i laugh when the girl started talking about things she wanted to do to him that her mother would not approve of! she was hilarious! and the drunk owner of the store the characters worked for was a trip! Skyla’s novels are just captivating, and energetic you cannot take your eyes off of the words, and you immediately want more after the chapter is done! That is how i felt about Curio. It left me sometimes with my mouth wide open in suprise and awe, and i was desperate to read on, but had to wait until the next chapter came. There were days when i couldnt wait until the next week started so i could get to work and read Curio! It is a fun, spunky book, and it definitely takes your imagination to another level! i would definitely recommend this book to someone who wants to read a book and really get lost in it!

"An occult shop with problems"

Rating: 7 / 10

I discovered Skyla Dawn Cameron, when I stumbled onto her other on-going serial - "Children of the Apocalypse", and through there I started reading "Curio Killed the Cat".

Although there’s only 13 chapters or so of the story posted till now, it’s original enough to have captured my interest. Updating once a week instead of once a month is another plus when it comes to me.

Lilith - a succubus, who doesn’t want to embrace her heritage, and would always suspect any man interested in her, to be reacting to her powers instead of falling for her as a person, and for her intelect is one of my favourites in this story. If she only had a little bit more confidence in herself, I’m sure she could conquer the world. At the same time, she’s the only character for whom I always feel sympathy. I can’t say the same about the others, who just as some real people one moment grate your nerves and the other bring a smile on your lips. There’s also Maura - Lilith’s mother, who wants the best for her daughter - which in her language means getting her to date more and who can’t understand her daughter’s point of view or her reluctance at using the powers she was born with.

While it’s still at an early stage, but judging on the material posted up till now and on other works by Skyla, I’m sure it’ll be an interesting and enjoyable must-read.
