Synopsis

"A city isolated; a past forgotten; a future inherited."

The city of Home is isolated on all sides by vast forests of enormous trees. It persists, untouched by time, inside its high circular wall. Although the city's origins have been lost to history, the gifts of the ancestors have not. Citizens live in plants that grow to form dwellings. Great flowers generate heat to warm the hearths of these dwellings. A glowing moss lights the halls of every structure in the city—no need for fire with such inheritances.

Since Winter began in this lonely city amid the boreal forests, every citizens has had the same nightmare, night after night: a faceless girl in the woods. The Scholars of the Academy offer no explanation; their reliance on the empirical fails them this Winter. The Mystics in the Illicit District, where drugs and prophecy flow freely, offer solace, but perhaps not truth. It seems no one truly knows the meaning of the nightmare, except perhaps Chairman Gan, head of the city and the Academy. He has been scarce since the nightmare came, keeping odd hours and making bizarre requests.

Meanwhile, a Weaver in the city named Benn is unbothered by this nightmare, because he has lived with greater terror for most of his life. When he walks Home's streets, he sees the dead as well as the living. Compared to that, a nightmare is beyond concern.

Still, the nightmare holds a fascination for the Weaver. Perhaps the girl in the nightmare holds a message for him and the city of Home. He, and the others invited, will soon discover Home's forgotten past, and the future offered by the return of its founders.
