"Interesting and a Good Start" permalink
I found the story so far enjoyable with only a few issues.
Good: The descriptions are top notch, especially the descriptions of traveling between worlds and the moment of the truck accident. The dialogue for the most part is solid (though I agree with the whole "jerkface" problem). The characterization was strong and I really like Yuri — she’s managed not to seem like a damsel in distress despite being, well, in a great deal of distress for the first few chapters. The story moves along at a good pace (aside from the prologue) and I read all the chapters in one sitting.
Bad: I found myself skimming over the prologue and only starting to really read once Reese and Yuri were discussing their lives, and I felt a bit regretful that I was being informed of Yuri’s family history with anecdotal dialogue rather than in-scene, through flashback or in the prologue. I still have an unclear picture of Adan physically despite the brief history provided, though I suspect the world will be given greater detail as we go through it. I got a FFX [videogame] vibe from it, though I’m unsure how intentional that was.
All in all, a great premise that is taking off nicely and is improving with each chapter.
