Space & Time by Sharon T. Rose product Read This

"Smart, complex & compelling"

Space & Time is complex story with a well laid plot and interesting characters.

Space & Time is the story of Jregli, a Yerban girl and a slave. She is smart, and adept at matters of her own culture, but frequently perplexed when she runs up against the very divergent views of those around her.

There is a great amount of thought and detail put into the description of Yebran culture and physique, yet I didn’t find it dry or preachy; it managed to still be part of the story, not just a sidebar. The ways in which Jregli interacts with her co-workers, her boss, and others on the station present a nice cross-cultural picture that both tells us about the individual species and adds to the character development.

I’ve read as far as Chapter 70, and there’s been a few small twists and turns but nothing huge yet. There was one incident which I expect to have a large pay off later, but mostly it’s still building towards something. That’s ok, though, because the build itself is interesting.

The writing is clear, thoughtful, and descriptive. It’s obvious that author Sharon T. Rose knows what her dominant species are about and has put thought into how the cultures both mesh and clash. The story is neither dumbed down (ie. using the ever popular 6th grade vocab) nor pretenious; it is simply a smart, well written story.

Space & Time is likely to appeal to lovers of space opera style sci fi, or the good, old fashioned ‘aliens in space’ stories.
